October 18, 2022, Erbil, Iraq – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Iraq recently concluded a three-day workshop in cooperation with the Iraqi Horticulture Development Program “IHD” and ECO Consult funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, focusing on nursery management for the production of vegetable seedlings to increase the skills and knowledge development of farmers in the production of vegetable seedlings.

15 farmers and extension workers from Ninewa Governorate joined. The training course covered vegetable nursery, nursery location, seed treatment, vegetable seedling production techniques including seed planting, irrigation, seedling care, misting and plant hardening, fertilization, fungus and insect infestation prevention, and pest control.

FAO Iraq is working to develop the vegetable production chain and introduce the seedling production technology in Ninewa Governorate through farmer groups under the project “supporting the agricultural livelihoods of rural and peri-urban returnees and communities in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq” funded by the European Union and in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, in which 10 greenhouses with accessories were built and installed in the districts of Zumar and Hamam Al-Alil. This technology should improve the production of vegetable crops in quantity and quality, and increase the income of market gardeners, and thus improve the income of farmers and improve the quality of local agricultural products.
