Popular Açaí-based food and beverage brand pledges to fully transition to plant-based and post-consumer recycled packaging in the United States by 2025
SAN CLEMENTE, CA., July 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Sambazon, the world’s leading supplier of Fair Trade and Organic Certified Açaí, commits to plant-based and post-consumer recycled packaging for all U.S. retail products by 2025. In its first Impact Report, the brand popular Açaí-based foods and drinks company said that by the end of 2021, 64% of its U.S. retail packaging was made from post-consumer or plant-based recycled materials. This is almost double the figure announced by the certified Fair Trade and Organic brand in 2019.
Açaí, a popular superfood berry from Brazil, retains its nutritional value only a few hours after picking, which is why it is mainly exported and sold frozen. In 2021, it was the third largest of all frozen fruits sold in supermarkets in the United States, after strawberries and blueberries. Acai food and beverage products are a $500+ million industry and are expected to exceed $2 billion by 2026.
“For years, the frozen food industry has relied on plastic packaging to help extend shelf life. Frozen Açaí packaging must be able to withstand the challenges of sealing, freezing, transporting and thawing while remaining strong and flexible under all conditions. Explain Ryan Black, CEO and co-founder of SAMBAZON. “In 2018, we joined the One Step Closer (OSC) Packaging Collaborative, pioneering, testing and testing viable plant-based alternatives for hard-to-replace frozen flexible film.”
Since 2019, SAMBAZON has transitioned its pints of sorbet from plastic to paper and fresh juices in post-consumer recycled bottles. In 2020, the certified organic Açaí brand launched ready-to-eat bowls with plant-based fiber containers. The packaging changes allowed SAMBAZON to avoid using more than 360 tons of virgin plastic in 2021.
Founded in 2000, SAMBAZON has grown from a food startup that introduced Açaí bowls to America to a $100M+ global leader in the category. Approximately 60% of the global Açaí export market and 90% of the CPG market is represented by SAMBAZON, with over 25,000 distribution points with leading retailers and catering establishments in over 50 countries. In 2021, SAMBAZON succeeded in securing more than $50 million in financing. The main investors are Nextworld Evergreen, EcoEnterprises Fund and Kitchen Fund.
Founded in 2000, SAMBAZON, an acronym for Sustainable Management of the Brazilian Amazon, was the first company to introduce “certified Açaí” to the world, providing certified organic and fair trade Açaí products. All SAMBAZON products are made from USDA Organic Acai, Non-GMO, Vegan, and Fair Trade For Life. SAMBAZON’s fair trade certification has helped protect the Amazon rainforest and its rich biodiversity and has had a positive impact on thousands of local producers. With a commitment to invest a percentage of local Açaí purchases back into the community, SAMBAZON has helped support education and build health centers, community centers and schools.
