Global Acai Market Leader SAMBAZON Will Switch to Plant-Based Packaging by 2025


Popular Açaí-based food and beverage brand pledges to fully transition to plant-based and post-consumer recycled packaging in the United States by 2025

SAN CLEMENTE, CA., July 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Sambazon, the world’s leading supplier of Fair Trade and Organic Certified Açaí, commits to plant-based and post-consumer recycled packaging for all U.S. retail products by 2025. In its first Impact Report, the brand popular Açaí-based foods and drinks company said that by the end of 2021, 64% of its U.S. retail packaging was made from post-consumer or plant-based recycled materials. This is almost double the figure announced by the certified Fair Trade and Organic brand in 2019.

Açaí, a popular superfood berry from Brazil, retains its nutritional value only a few hours after picking, which is why it is mainly exported and sold frozen. In 2021, it was the third largest of all frozen fruits sold in supermarkets in the United States, after strawberries and blueberries. Acai food and beverage products are a $500+ million industry and are expected to exceed $2 billion by 2026.

The packaging changes allowed SAMBAZON to avoid using more than 360 tons of virgin plastic in 2021.
