Brooklyn Bedding achieved Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification last month.
The certification recognizes the mattress brand’s sustainable efforts to ensure that every component of its organic mattress is constructed using GOTS-certified materials and ethical working practices, and is backed by independent certification of the entire chain. textile supply.
Developed in 2006, GOTS has set the benchmark for a universal understanding of environmentally friendly production systems and social responsibility in the organic textile sector. The certification serves as a global standard for ensuring the organic status and socially responsible manufacturing of textiles throughout the supply chain, including fiber production, processing and manufacturing.
To obtain GOTS certification, the mattress manufacturer passed a series of examinations and expectations, including an assessment of its processing and storage system, an inspection of chemical inputs and social criteria checks. The inspections also include a thorough quality assurance check of all GOTS certified products before they are packed and delivered to the customer.
“We are delighted to recognize that Brooklyn Bedding has achieved GOTS certification,” said Lori WymanGOTS representative for North America. “They are now listed in the database of GOTS certified suppliers for organic textiles on our website by typing “Mattress” or “Brooklyn Bedding” in the free text field and selecting United States.”
The GOTS certification puts Brooklyn Bedding in closer competition with rival Avocado Green Mattress, which is set to become the world’s first certified zero-waste mattress factory.
Avocado mattresses are handmade in California with naturally non-toxic and 100% certified organic materials from domestic and international sources, including the brand’s own farms in India and Guatemala.
Avocado was the first mattress manufacturer to be Climate Neutral certified, taking responsibility for its carbon emissions. The brand is also GreenGuard Gold, Made Safe, Climate Neutral and Fair Trade certified. More recently, the B Corp opened its first flagship store in New York.
